Answers to Questionnaire

I was curious about what three speed bicycles are still around and their condition. The response has been very good to nearly overwhelming. Thank you for your responses. I invite anyone who hasn't had their say to do so. This will be ongoing as long as I think that it can be useful.

Here are the responses that I have received from my request for information about your bicycle(s) in my questionnaire on my website on

Email addresses are confidential and, if they were included in the message by the sender, have been removed before the message was listed here.

Questions asked have been answered if the email address was included with the question. If I missed anyone's question please email me again. I'm sorry if I missed any questions. I don't think that I have, but it is possible. Remember, I don't claim to be an expert, but I will help if I can.

This page is for comments that I have received. I will not make a habit of answering questions on this page as it will dilute your comments and make this page much too long. I may answer some questions on this page if I feel I need to comment. If you see my answer under the question then either there wasn't an email address included in the message or for some reason I felt compelled to comment.

And please remember that these comments are anonymous. I have no contact information unless the responder actually includes their email address in their message. I am not giving out any information other than what is on this page. If an email address was given to me it is confidential.  If you list a public website with your response, that will not be removed from the message unless you request that.

The latest are first.

I have gone a few months without updating this page.  Since the only way I could keep up to date was to skip some messages that is what I did.

It does say made in England on it.  The serial number I found on it is 65332.
If you could give me any info on it that would be great.

Comments : I am pretty sure the bike origionally came from Holland as it was
registered there. It has a 3 speed Sachs Torpedo internal hub gears with coaster
brake. The Seat is a very comfortable Selle Royal. The wheels are french made
with german white tyres. The light is a Winchester with a Dansi generator. The
bike is now in Australia and is still a great bike to ride.

original but was missing a Dunlop rimmed front wheel and I had to do some
digging before finding a 32-hole.  I will use a Raleigh hub which will be close
enough to original for me.  Expect pics in a few weeks...its a very flashy bike
compared to Raleighs.

Comments : The older Hercules models as well as those sold in Britain seem to be
of excellent quality; however, I have found that those marketed through AMF in
the 60s are of very poor quality. The frames seem lighter and flimsier than
Raleighs,Rudges and even Raleigh- made Huffys of the same period. The tubing is
easily crushed by brake bolts and kickstand etc. Also front hub and bottom
bracket oil ports are missing. Crank steel seems inferior as well! Avoid these

Comments : Hi!  I like your website.  Its the first I've found willing to answer
questions about bicycles.  I've a Robin Hood as mentioned above.  The date on
the hub is 61 and the serial number is 5 2050 RA.  From what little info I can
find, the serial number appears to be from 65-66, but I can't find any specific
information to confirm this. I want to learn as much as possible about the bike.
I went out to buy a nice modern one and fell in love with this one instead,
which came complete in very good condition with head and tail lights and almost
all its original part.  Your help will greatly be appreciated.

I usually find Raleigh 3-spds but this time its a Hercules, Ser#15728RZ. It has
a Hercules Cycle & Motor Co headbadge and marked rear hub.  Dimpled fork (ala
Raleigh), Dunlop 26" rims and an oil fitting on BB.  Lacking a rear SA date, I'm
guessing late 50's for date.  What do you think?  I'll also pose this question

Comments : Hercules Courier Lady's 3 Speed
same Model Year 1959 or 1960 were
Purchased together some where in
England by the original owners while
station there in the US military. I bought
them in a garage sale from the original
owners in 1991 in a small town in Kansas (Derby) a suburb of Wichita Kansas. I
took them to a bicycle shop to see if they needed any maintenance and the shop
owner said they were in mint condition.  The Gent's (Phillips) has a bag under
the seat and a spring loaded book rack on the front, also a head light that run
off a generator built in the rear wheel and a rear fender reflector and a bell
on the handle bars. I think that would be the loaded model. The Lady's
(Hercules) has a rear rack a head light that runs off of a generator that rubs
against the rear tire with a tail light on it, also has a rear fender reflector
and a bell on the handle bars. I think every thing on the bikes is original
except the tires. I could get you some picture if you would like. Thanks for
listening to me.

I know nothing about. If I bypass the battery holder the lights work but as soon
as I reconnect the backup unit then the lights no longer work.It would be great

I had an old english bike when I was a kid,

I recalled in th ecenter of the rims they had these little groves going around

the friction pads would apply to.
This bike has some other kind of rim, slightly larger in cercumfence.
Question the back rim is Engish, the three speed slector is Strmmy or what ever
it is called.
Do they make Kalkhoff bikes yet.
Noting around here for them, all new age stuff.

Comments : Greetings, I need to put a Royce Union bicylce back together, from a
box of unknown parts.  I am curious to learn about the history of this bike.  I
have found no info. on Royce Union.  Do you know if it is part of Raleigh?  I
also need to find a book on repairing and putting back together older bikes.
Here is the information about the bike to better help with describing it:
Three speed- Sturmey/Archer  60-5. Down tube has "ROYCE UNION" written the
lenght of it. Steer tube has emblem with Royce Union, Union Cycle Works,
HOlland".  Brakes have Weinmann Juior and other (front?) has a small fish with a
rainbow dorsal emblem on it.  The bike is black with a flared chain gaurd that
reads "starliner".  It actually looks very much like the picture of your Sears
bike made in Austria.  If you have any information as to what this bike is, how
I can rebuild it and how I can learn which parts go where...I would be forever
grateful.  Thank you, thank you.  YOu can respond to the email following if you

Bicycle Brand : Raleigh
Bicycle Model : Tourist
Model Year : 1975
Comments : The date on the hub has 75 then space 4.  Does this mean it was a
1975 or a 1979?  It has rod brakes, if that helps any. I purchased the bicycle
in 1981(stripped down) and had many of the parts that were missing, replaced
(ie. mudguards (fenders), rear rack, tires, tubes and brake pads.  I am in the
process of cleaning it up for sale.  It has been garage kept. It appears that I
may have lost the tire pump.  It was aluminum, had lines like it was an octogon
shape instead of round.  It didn't work very well but it was nice to have for
the complete picture.  I would like to know how to go about replacing it as

My Answer: The first two numbers on the hub mean that it was made in 1975. The next number(s) may mean the
either the number of the month or the number of the fortnight. I have seen numbers on these hubs such as 62 13 so the month idea for the second number could be wrong.

Bicycle Model : royal imperial
Model Year : 1960
Comments : Found this jewel at a flea market. The tires were gone and so were
the pedals. Otherwise, it looks completely "1960" original and unmolested.

My Answer: Thank you for the look at the pictures of your Royal Imperial Hercules bicycle.
For years I have been blaming myself for having stripped the paint from my 1960 Hercules/Hawthorne
bicycle and painting it black, even though I was only 13 years old when I did that. Your pictures
have reminded me that the red paint was already fading to silver when I decided to change its color.
If I hadn't painted it, (that would have been in 1965), it would still have decals but it would not
be the red color that it was in 1960. It appears that the red color that the factory painted these
bicycles was made by painting a translucent coat of red over a silver coat. The red color faded fast
with exposure to sunlight, leaving the bicycle more silver to pink than the original red. But that is
much more the preferred condition compared to refinished as mine will be. And then I will have to find
or make new decals.

not rounded on the edges but flat
fullfenders with the edges of the fender being with a flat side. The chain guard
is long and a full guard. There is a model number on the left side where the

Comments : i found a hawthorne bicycle. its a 3 speed. and shifts from the hub.
it has a grip shifter, and a saddle seat. i was wondering if you could tell me
what year make and model and how much its worth.

thank you for your time.

My Answer: The year can usually be determined by the numbers on the hub if it is a Sturmey Archer hub . Back to the 1940's the hub will have two sets of numbers. If they are something like 70   6  that would mean that the hub was made in 1970. If the hub is the original one then the bicycle was probably also made in 1970. If it is a Hercules hub then it is not easy to determine when the bicycle was made.

The value of most bicycles is not well set. I have seen English three speed bicycles sold for as little as $5 at a yard sale and $10 on Ebay and I have seen them sell for over $600. The average sports (sportster) model Hercules of the 1960's and before seem to usually sell between $40 and $120. AMF Hercules bicycles seem to be of less demand are harder to sell and sell for less. Rod brakes, even though generally considered less efficient in operation than the more common cabled brakes, increase the value. Roadsters as opposed to sports or sportsters usually bring prices at the upper end in the $200 to over $600. All these estimates vary according ti condition of the bicycle and where they are sold.

commentbox: This was a classy-looking bike: black 21" frame with chrome
steel mudguards and 26 x 1 3/8 wheels. After having been bent and
straightened a few times following crashes, the cross bar (top tube) finally
snapped about 7 or 8 years ago. I haven't had the heart to throw the machine away.
Prior to its becoming unserviceable, I had rigged up a derailleur chain
tensioner and 3 chain-rings to give it 9 speeds.

commentbox: Came painted a rather garrish orange, chrome fenders, headlight,
Sturmey AW hub. In 1980, I was transporting it on the back of my Harley
(don't ask) and it fell off, potato-chipping the rear wheel. I gathered some
junker bikes about me and converted it to a 10-speed which I road about 10
miles a day. Must've been a good bike, because even though it looked rough as
a cob, somebody still stole it.
